The present study analyzes ecological and genetic aspects of endangered Subtropical Atlantic Forest (SAF) remnants of the Alto Uruguai river ecosystem, Southern
Brazil. The thesis focuses on the last intact SAF, namely Turvo Park, and five small SAF remnants, as well as one fragment of Tropical Atlantic Forest at the Atlantic coast. The objectives were to investigate potential genetic losses caused by forest fragmentation and to generate ecological and genetic knowledge as a basis for alternative uses and protection. Firstly, the floristic composition of woody plants and the richness of timber species occuring in this ecosystem were inventoried. Secondly, aspects of the ecological state and genetic conservation of forest remnants were analysed, focusing on Sorocea bonplandii (Moraceae), a key species of this ecosystem. Demographic and genetic aspects of S. bonplandii were investigated using allozym and AFLP molecular markers. These analyses revealed the rich
biodiversity and the prominent occurrence of timber species in both the intact SAF of Turvo Park as well as the SAF fragments. Moreover, the population genetic analyses revealed high genetic variability within the sub-populations of S. bonplandii in ali fragments, and apparent genetic stability in spite of extensive forest fragmentation. |
